Tallgrass Brewing Company
Manhattan, KS, USA
India Pale Ale
Tallgrass is one of the many breweries that is just now becoming available in the Philadelphia area as we continue to be spoiled with not only local offerings but more obscure breweries from other regions being sent to the market. I had a pint of their Oasis at Isaac Newton’s a few weeks ago and was immediately turned out to them, the fact that they can their beers in the 16 oz tallboys was just icing on the cake. I just love the format and hope more and more breweries start canning in this size. I cannot wait until I can get my hands on some Torpedo pounders!
This pours a slightly cloudy copper with some substantial cream colored head but doesn’t appear to be too carbonated. Has a pretty vibrant aroma, pretty sweet with lot’s of citrus going on. Malts keep this moderately hoppy IPA well balanced. The light sweetness sticks around and isn’t obscured by the mild bitterness. It’s a fully flavored beer without being in your face, surprisingly malty and while I didn’t find it to be “bombastically hopped” as the can states, there’s still enough of the floral citrus hops in there to keep the inner hophead satisfied. Really slick and clean finish, no lingering acidity or bitterness. This is a good old fashioned solid IPA, nothing too severe and would make a great introductory beer for someone looking to explore hoppier ales. Nothing to write home about but enough to write about here.
